Air Conditioning - New R22 Gas Regulations

KNOW ABOUT REPLACING YOUR R22 (HCFC) GAS

As of January 1st 2010 the use of virgin R22 was prohibited in the maintenance and servicing of heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment due to its long lasting damage to the environment and the ozone layer.  Here's the run down and what it means to you:

• January 1st 2004:  The introduction and supply of new air conditioning systems operating on R22 was banned.
• December 31st 2009: The supply of new R22 refrigerant used to service RAC equipment was banned.
• January 1st 2010: Only reclaimed or recycled R22 refrigerant may be used from January 2010 until 31st December 2014.  Regulations also demand that a formal record should be kept on all equipment.
• December 1st 2014: Systems operating on R22 refrigerant will be classed as "not servicable".
• December 31st 2014: Complete ban on R22 refrigerant, including reclaimed or recycled, comes into force.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU:

Since the introduction of the environmental regulations on January 1st 2010 heavy fines can be imposed on those in possession of a heating, ventialtion and/or airconditioning system with a leakage of HCFC R22 gas.  To help avoid leakages occuring in your system a minimum of bi-annual servicing should be carried out on all systems.  Please contact us at Reliant Engineering for a free survey of your units where we will give you a report on any action that may be required by you.

Alternatively, as the use of any R22 gas will be fully banned after December 2014 it may be worth considering upgrading your system.  As the demand for reclaimed R22 gas is expected to surpass supply by approximately 20%, prices are expected to rise dramatically therefore should a leak occur in a system it will need to be topped up with reclaimed R22 gas.  New advances in technology mean that existing pipework can be used wth some new systems meaning less expense and less disruption to your premises plus with recent advances in technology new systems are far more efficient and less energy demanding than older systems so payack is within a short time.
